  • Syria
    • Conflict in Syria reached its 11th year in 2021, over a decade.
    • There are 13.5 million displaced Syrian, representing more than half of Syria’s total population.
    • 6.8 million Syrian refugees are hosted in 128 countries.
    • 80% of all Syrian refugees are located in neighboring countries, with Turkey hosting more than half (3.6 million).
  • About the Crisis in Syria

As the Syria crisis enters its eleventh year, the humanitarian situation is more difficult than ever. An estimated 14.6 million people need humanitarian assistance and more than half of the population remains displaced from their homes – including 5.6 million refugees living in neighboring countries and more than 6.9 million internally displaced inside Syria. Women and children comprise more than two thirds of those displaced.

Over the years, Syrians have shown remarkable resilience, but as war continues, hope is fading fast. In 2021, three quarters of all households in Syria could not meet their most basic needs – 10 percent more than the year before. In Lebanon, over 90 percent of Syrians live in extreme poverty.

In northwest Syria, flooding and outbreaks of violence have displaced tens of thousands of Syrian families since December 2019. They now live in terrible conditions amidst widespread destruction of services and economic hardship. With no end in sight to the conflict, UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi calls it “the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time and a continuing cause for suffering.”

  • Syrian Refugee Camps and Settlements

  • Syrian refugees have sought asylum in more than 130 countries, but the vast majority live in neighboring countries within the region, such as Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. Turkey alone hosts the largest population (over 3.7 million) and in Lebanon, approximately one in four people is a Syrian refugee.
  • The majority of Syrians in the region live with host communities. Only five percent of Syrian refugees live in a refugee camp – 50 percent less than five years ago.
  • In  Za’atari refugee camp, Jordan, more than half of the refugees are children and 30 percent are female-headed households.
  • Inside Syria, 1.8 million people are still living in camps and informal settlements.
  • Still the  “Crisis of Syria”, continued to be bigger and bigger, day after day, never ending till today?
  • 14.6 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, up from 13.4 million last year.
  • 75%Three-quarters of all households in Syria could not meet their most basic needs in 2021 – 10 percent more than the year before.

101 FACTS& FIGURES ON THE "SYRIAN REFUGEES CRISIS"!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON WHERE YOUR DONATION GOES?

$About Your Donations, Where & How They are used

When we promise your donation is in safe hands, we mean we work very hard to ensure you can trust us to use your donation in the most effective way to ease the suffering of others. You can trust us to deliver aid programs of the highest quality that bring immediate relief and long-term benefit to people’s lives. You can also trust that your money goes where we say it is going. You can trust that we follow the Islamic, legal, and good practice standards you would expect of the world’s largest independent Muslim charity.

None of that would be possible if our admin costs were 0% – which is a claim some charities make. And we would not be able to continue our work if we didn’t spend a portion of our income on raising more funds.

Admin is overhead expenses like rent for offices and equipment like computers and phones. It also covers the cost of safeguarding vulnerable people, providing first-class training to staff, auditing our accounts, ensuring cyber security, and complying with all our legal obligations as a charity.

Fundraising is about communicating with our donors, letting them know what humanitarian issues the world is facing and the difference we can make with their support. It covers all the different ways we raise money including online appeals, fundraising events and activities, placing adverts, printing leaflets, coordinating volunteers, etc. For every $1 we spend on fundraising, we make $10 back, allowing us to reach even more people in need.

Why you can trust us

We are accountable to Allah, to our donors, and to all those we have the honor to serve. In line with our Islamic values of Ihsan (excellence) and Amanah (custodianship), we are committed to ensuring your donations are used in the most efficient way and we provide the best possible service to those we serve.

We believe in transparency and accountability. That’s why we’re clear that we have admin and fundraising costs and that they are necessary expenditures for a global charity committed to the highest international humanitarian standards. Information on our admin costs and financial accounts are published every year in our Annual Report and Financial Statements which are independently audited, lodged with the Charity Commission, and published on our website.

That does not mean we are perfect. We are constantly seeking opportunities to cut costs without cutting corners, to work more efficiently, and to reduce waste. We train all our staff to adhere to our Islamic, ethical and humanitarian standards and continue to explore ways to improve our practices and reduce expenditure. What we don’t do is bypass professional standards or expect to operate solely on goodwill just because we are a Muslim charity. If anything, having Islamic in our name and operating in some of the world’s most troubled regions invites a level of scrutiny that means our processes, performance, and transparency have to be second to none.

Why you need to ask questions

Every charity is accountable to its donors, and every donor has a right to ask questions about how their money is spent. We hope the conversation will move from ‘why do you have admin costs?’ to ‘how efficient and effective are you with my money?’ and ‘how is my donation making a difference?’

If a charity is claiming to have zero admin costs, ask questions. If an aid program is not evaluated for its impact, ask questions. If staff is not trained in safeguarding vulnerable people, ask questions. If an organization doesn’t protect your personal data, ask questions. And if well-meaning humanitarians are not experts in their field, ask questions.

We’ve answered some of the frequently asked questions about how we spend donors’ money. If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to provide as much information as you need to assure you that your donation is in safe hands.

If you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at Info@HopeCharityFoundation.COM

Why does Hope Charity Foundation ask for donations?

Donations fund the work we do, supporting vulnerable people in times of crisis and helping to lift them out of poverty. With your generous support, we will reach in the next coming years, over 6 million Refugees, working in some of the world’s most dangerous and difficult places.

How much money do you raise from donors?

Most of our work is funded by individual donors. In the next coming years, Hope Charity Foundation, We’ll take the chance worldwide to raise $12 million which will allow us to support over 8 million people of “Refugees”. We aimed for $6 million of this to come from the public and the rest to come from various sources including income from our charity avenues; funds from the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC); institutional donors such as the European Commission and the UN; and charitable foundations and trusts.

What is my donation spent on?

For every $1 you donate, 87 percent is spent on helping people in need. 9 percent goes towards raising more funds and 4 percent is spent on administration costs. Administration and fundraising costs are sometimes bracketed together and described as ‘support costs.’ This is the breakdown but really all of your donations are used either directly or indirectly to help people in need because administration and fundraising are a necessary part of delivering aid.

Why do you have admin costs?

Administration allows us to deliver aid effectively as a professional charity running large-scale programs across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. It ensures the right aid gets to the right people at the right time. We aim to keep our administration costs to a minimum without cutting corners in the quality, efficiency, and transparency of our work.

Why do you have admin costs?

Administration allows us to deliver aid effectively . It ensures the right aid gets to the right people at the right time. We aim to keep our administration costs to a minimum without cutting corners in the quality, efficiency, and transparency of our work.

How much do you pay your staff and CEO?

We have a structured salary scale in place to ensure we are able to attract professional staff and that they are paid a fair wage for their expertise, in line with the local cost of living. Our salary bill relative to others in the international charity sector is comparatively low, and this fact speaks volumes about the commitment and passion of the people who work for “The Hope Charity Foundation”. In fact, some of our staff regularly work beyond their contracted hours and spend long periods away from home, especially during an emergency crisis.

The CEO of Hope Charity Foundation Worldwide earns considerably less than any CEOs in the USA – as declared in our Annual Report – which is far less than the CEOs of other USA-based charities of a similar scale.

Do you spend money on anything else?

Yes, around 1% of our income is spent on campaigning on social justice issues like gender justice, support for refugees, and tackling climate change. We believe it is important to raise awareness of issues that affect the most vulnerable people in the world. By campaigning, lobbying governments, going on marches, running petitions, and putting pressure on decision-makers, we can help make the world a kinder, fairer place.

What do admin costs cover?

The admin costs cover two sectors:

First, 3% administration expenses.

Second, 10% raising funds.

The 3% we take from your donations for administration expenses, is used to invest in the equipment, infrastructure, and processes we need to operate professionally and efficiently and keep people safe. Administration expenses include overhead expenses like rent for offices, equipment like computers and phones, admin staff salaries, and volunteer expenses. It also covers costs like safeguarding vulnerable people, providing first-class training to staff, auditing our accounts, ensuring cyber security, and complying with all our legal obligations as a charity.

Why do you spend 10% on raising funds?

The 10% we spend on fundraising covers all the different ways we invest in generating income. These include online appeals, fundraising events and activities, placing adverts, printing leaflets, coordinating volunteers, etc. We believe this is money well spent because, for every $1 we spend on fundraising, we make $10 back so that we can support even more people in need. We also invest in communicating with our donors not just to ask for donations but to inform and engage them on the humanitarian issues they care about as well as report on the impact of the work they have funded.

Are people aware of Hope Charity Foundation's admin costs?

We believe in transparency and accountability, so we regard it as an important responsibility to make people aware that we have admin and fundraising costs and that they are necessary expenditures for a global charity committed to the highest international humanitarian standards. Information on our admin costs and annual financial accounts are published in our Annual Report, which is independently audited.

Why does Hope Charity Foundation not have a 100% donation policy?

Hope Charity Foundation would not be able to operate on the scale it does without spending money on admin. It is very unlikely that any charity can operate a 100% donation policy – in other words, guaranteeing that 100% of donations go exclusively and directly to people in need. We believe in being open and clear about our admin costs, which are part and parcel of our seriousness about complying with all our legal obligations and our commitment to meeting high standards in effective aid delivery.

Why can’t Hope Charity Foundation use volunteers instead of paid staff?

We use both, believing sincerely that the best approach to being effective and also cost-effective is to have an appropriate balance between a core of paid staff and a large body of volunteers, working together in a coordinated way.

The complexity of the work we do requires expertise, specialist knowledge, and long-term commitment. Our staff would not be able to make this commitment on a voluntary basis without a salary. Over 95% of our staff are local people who come from the communities they serve; by investing in them we are ensuring not only that”Hope Charity Foundation” has the best possible workforce, attuned to the needs of their own communities, but also that they are able to support their families and the local economy.
